Political essay
From the Fire of Abadan to State-Building Politics
A political autobiography tracing my journey from childhood in Abadan and left-wing activism to secular democracy, with an analysis of celebrity politics and Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi’s team.
In this article, I trace forty-seven years of lived experience and political reflection: childhood during the 1979 revolution, displacement in the Iran–Iraq war, left-wing activism and my subsequent commitment to secular democracy, the rule of law and state-building. I then examine the relationship between civic courage, public popularity and the competence required to govern, with a discussion of Ali Karimi and Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi’s team.
